Europe 2005: Pompeii

Outside the Porta Nocera

I went to Pompeii on my first full day in Italy. The train ride was pleasant. European trains are typically very nice. They get used a lot, so they get maintained.

It was my second time in Pompeii, the first being more than twenty years before. Hadn't changed much, except there were more signs than I remembered.

And crowds. There were hordes of schoolchildren there. It was easier to picture it as a busy urban center with all the people walking the streets.

I spent a long afternoon wandering around Pompeii, taking pictures and thinking about how well our own cities would hold up after 2000 years of neglect.
